CAMP weekend reading - smart cars killing motorcyclists, bear attacks and hitting a moose
It is officially Autumn, one of our favorite seasons (if you missed it, we have a full post how to track the Fall foliage here). Here are a few articles in the motorcycle and outdoors world to keep you company while you sip your first pumpkin drinks:
Why so called “smart” cars with so called “autopilots” killing motorcyclists? It is a question that is increasingly asked both in Europe and in the US. This article looks at the technical causes and at what we motorcyclists can do. An interesting quote from the article: “In a test to see if cars with forward collision warning systems would detect a motorcycle stopped in the car's path, the cars passed in only 32% of the tests, compared to 95% when the vehicle ahead was a stopped car. Another test of multiple cars with adaptive cruise control found that the cars were often not only later to detect a slower motorcycle ahead, but were also less likely to detect it if the motorcycle was not in the center of the lane. Consider that motorcyclists typically ride in the left or right wheel track of the lane, rather than the center, where there is more likely to be fluids or debris, and you can see how long-standing safety practices are being scrambled by the fact that we're sharing the road with automated systems”.
We are going to the Smoky Mountains for our last S’more in October, and bears will be active looking for food before hibernation. What better bedtime reading than these six bear attack stories?
Hitting a deer is high on my list of motorcycle fears. After reading about this guy’s experience when hitting a moose I feel better. Not.
