CAMP Weekend Reading - defining motorcycles, riding on the beach, having fun in the outdoors
Here are a few articles in the motorcycle and camping worlds that may keep you entertained this coming weekend.
Enduro, Dual Sport, Adventure motorcycles - how many times have you heard someone saying that you need a certain type of motorcycle for a certain ride? But do you know what each term indicate? Here is your answer. Btw, this is a good point to remind you that you do not need a specific type of motorcycle to join CAMP. As long as you are not planning to do any off road, any motorcycle will do, as you can see in these photos. But at least now we all know what’s the difference between enduro, dual sport and adventure.
Riding on the beach in California is about to come to an end - Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only area in California that lets you ride your motorcycle (and other off road vehicles) on the beach. This is about to change - as of 2024 off road use on the beach will be banned. Environmental and animal protection issues are mentioned, but the story is a lot more complicated than what one might think at first glance. No matter your opinion, if you want to ride on a California beach you only have 2023 to do it.
Do recreational campers or hunters/fishers have the most fun? - One of the most fascinating and off putting thing to witness in the American outdoor world is the complete divide existing between two types of outdoor enthusiasts: so called “consumptive” and “non consumptive” recreationists. Consumptive include hunters, fishers, anglers, even mushroom foragers; non-consumptive include hikers, backpackers, climbers, recreational campers. (I guess motocampers like us are in the middle?) The two groups don’t speak to one another; they shop at very different establishments (Cabela’s vs REI); and they can’t understand how the other group can consider themselves lovers of the outdoors. We will get back to this topic, but in the meantime, this article looks into who has more fun: hunters of hikers?
